Research project in partnership with ICHEC, ULiège, 2iE and Thomas Sankara University to design and promote sustainable, accessible and modular compressed earth brick (CEB) urban housing for the middle class in Burkina Faso.

This project aims to reappropriate traditional earthen housing (CEB) by the local population, particularly middle-income households.
The aim is to study the conditions for setting up an extraction/manufacturing/design/construction chain adapted to the land development of the city of Ouagadougou (PhD thesis 3), based on a specific and complete architectural concept at building level (PhD thesis 2) and anchored on a dimensioning model adapted to BTC (PhD thesis 1).

Context

Green building is an important pillar of sustainable urban development, particularly in the arid zones of Africa. It has a positive impact on health and the environment, and improves the marketability of buildings.
To ensure the success of this type of sustainable construction industry, however, a number of constraints and representations need to be overcome among the various players involved. For example, for middle-income households, concrete is seen as a poor man's material, while for certain urban elites, it is perceived as an ecological and noble material. This being the case, thinking about the economic realization of an industry requires thinking about business models that consistently combine economic sustainability and societal impact.

Needs addressed

The majority of people living in the Sahelian zone struggle to find sustainable, economical and comfortable housing. Ancestral techniques and their evolutions are struggling to compete with building systems imported from Europe, which are poorly adapted to the climatic environment.
HaBiMo aims to contribute to 3 main needs in this region:
- Ensuring access for all to decent, sustainable housing
- Combat global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the construction sector
- Increase the competitiveness of sustainable construction in BTC

Expected results

To achieve this objective, 4 main results are expected:
- The technical aspects required for the design and construction of CEB housing have been mastered.
- The sustainable economic model developed for the CEB sector meets the needs of stakeholders.
- The technical and economic knowledge and/or skills of those involved (workers, architects, contractors) in the CEB sector are strengthened on a long-term basis.
- Local and sub-regional players (housing ministries, property developers, banks, engineering and architecture associations, sub-regional and international organizations, etc.) are encouraged to promote CEB housing.
