Objectives and contribution to the program
The IFRS Applied course aims to deepen the students' command of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) framework through the practical examination of a selection of specific issues of practical and topical application. It emphasizes the communicative function of financial statements prepared under IFRS, as opposed to mere reporting. In particular, it focuses on the differences in purpose between the IFRS conceptual framework and the Belgian accounting framework.
Prerequisites and corequisites
The Applied IFRS course supplements the IFRS course of the Advanced Finance program.
Content
The structure of the Applied IFRS course is intended to be dynamic, based in particular on the topicality of the issues addressed. It is therefore subject to change, either in its order or content.
For example, topics addressed for the academic year 2021-2022 will include: the comparative reading of financial statements prepared under IFRS and Belgian accounting principles; the conversion of historical financial statements to IFRS; the analysis of accounting issues specific to the biopharmaceutical industry; or the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on IFRS financial statements.
Teaching methods
The pedagogy implemented in the Applied IFRS course gives a large place to the inductive approach. It is fully based on case studies enabling to move from specific and contextualized observations to more general and theoretical perspectives. The case studies aim at reproducing issues faced in professional practice. Cases are resolved in groups to encourage the sharing of knowledge and experience.
Assessment method
Assessment for the Applied IFRS course is continuous and progressive. It is essentially based on the resolution of cases or the examination of current accounting issues by students. The certification exam focuses on reasoning, structuring and logic and rewards analytical and consultative skills.
References
Specific documentation is made available to the students to provide them with the necessary background for each topic addressed in the Applied IFRS course. This documentation alternately takes the form of Powerpoint slides, written publications or audiovisual content.
