Objectives and contribution to the program

By virtue of its intrinsic nature as a language course, the general objectives of this UE enable students to develop mainly Competency 6 of their learning program, i.e. 'Communicating' - a Competency which can be broken down as follows:
- Dare to express ideas clearly, concisely, fluently, completely, argumentatively and assertively, in several languages
- Adapt oral communication to different contexts and their specific codes, as well as to different interlocutors, while actively listening.
- Develop clear, structured written communication adapted to the specific characteristics of your interlocutors (language, culture, function, etc.), making appropriate use of digital tools.
- Be able to debate, negotiate and persuade in accordance with professional and organizational codes, while respecting the diversity of interlocutors and using appropriate tools.

In addition, through its content and methodology, this UE also contributes to developing the student's broader attitudes, skills and know-how, most of which are typical of and at the heart of today's business life, and in which language no longer becomes an end in itself, but a tool in the service of other skills in the ICHEC program.

These include

- Self-development
By developing the capacity for lifelong learning and autonomous development
Learning from others, from experience and from mistakes, through open-mindedness and curiosity

- Exercising critical thinking
By observing a complex, systemic reality, gathering as much relevant data as possible using appropriate tools and considering different points of view
By questioning the reliability, quality and legitimacy of sources, including the productions of artificial intelligence.
By analyzing data, establishing links between different elements, applying scientific reasoning and mastering information technologies.
By questioning the decisions and tasks handled by digital systems in order to maintain control over them.

- Collaborate
By adopting an attitude of active listening and benevolence conducive to successful team integration.
By establishing the key guidelines necessary for a constructive, motivating and inclusive team dynamic and mode of operation.
By managing tensions and conflicts constructively and in a caring manner

Assessment method

Formative assessment: during the year.

Summative assessment in January:
mini written exam (100 points) and oral exam (100 points). The written exam is closed-book and covers the first 7 chapters of the book. Length of written exam = 20 minutes.

The oral exam is a dialogue to be performed; duration of the written exam = 15-20 minutes.

The mark awarded for the November test (20 points) is integrated into the mark for the January written exam.

The January exam counts for 20 points out of 120 in the June exam, provided it has been passed.

Summative assessment in June:
Closed-book written exam covering all the material covered during the year. It consists of a gap-fill text on declensions (20 points), a sentence construction section (30 points) and a written expression section (30 points). Duration= 2 hours.
The face-to-face oral exam consists of a conversation between the teacher and the student's German teacher on the topics covered and worked on during the course and during the role-plays done during the course. Duration = 15-20 minutes.

There are 2 scenarios depending on whether or not the student passed in January: if they passed in January, their mark out of 20 will be added to the June mark (100 pts) for a total mark out of 120. If they did not pass in January, their June mark will only be out of 100.

The June exam will be weighted as follows: 80 pts for the written exam, 120 pts for the oral exam, to be divided by 2 for a score out of 100. The score awarded (out of 20 points) for the country oral presentation will be added to that of the June oral exam.

Summative in-class assessment in August. 2-hour closed-book written exam covering all the material covered during the year. It includes a gap-fill text on declensions (20 points), a sentence construction section (30 points) and a written expression section (30 points). Duration= 2 hours. The oral exam consists of a conversation between the teacher and the student's German teacher on the topics covered and worked on during the course and during the role-playing exercises. Duration = 15 minutes.

The written exam counts for 80 points and the oral exam for 120 points.

Students must sit the 2 parts of the exam, oral and written, in January, June and August. Failure to do so will result in a mark of 0/20.
